Predictive Dialer

An automated outbound calling system that dials multiple numbers simultaneously, connecting live calls to available agents.

Predictive dialer is an advanced outbound calling system that uses algorithms to predict agent availability and dial multiple numbers in parallel — only connecting calls to agents when both the called party AND an agent are simultaneously available. This maximizes agent efficiency at the cost of increased TCPA compliance risk.

How Predictive Dialers Work

  1. System forecasts how many agents will be available in the next 30 seconds.
  2. Based on predicted availability, dials 1.5x to 2x the predicted available agents (e.g., dial 30 numbers for 15 available agents).
  3. When a live answer comes through and an agent becomes free, the system connects them.
  4. Numbers that answer but no agent is free are abandoned.

Efficiency Gains

  • Agent talk time is maximized: agents almost never sit idle waiting for calls.
  • Contacts per agent: 100-200 per hour (vs. 30-60 for manual or preview dialers).
  • Cost per successful contact is lowest of all dialing modes.

TCPA Abandoned Call Rule

The FCC's "Three-Second Rule" requires that for predictive dialer campaigns, the abandoned call rate (calls that connect but no agent is available) must not exceed 3% on average. Violations trigger FCC fines and private lawsuits.

Compliance Best Practices

  • Monitor real-time abandoned call rate; adjust dial-ratio if exceeding 3%.
  • Maintain detailed logs of every dial, connection, abandonment, and agent availability for audit.
  • Require prior express written consent on all calls to cell phones.
