Progressive Dialer
An automated dialing system that dials one number per available agent, waiting for connection before dialing next.
Progressive dialer is an automated outbound calling system that dials one phone number per available agent — in a one-to-one ratio. The system waits for the first call to either connect (and be handed to the agent) or terminate (no answer, voicemail) before dialing the next number for that agent.
How Progressive Dialers Work
- Agent logs in and is marked available.
- System dials one number from the list.
- If live answer: call connects to agent; agent speaks with prospect.
- If no answer / voicemail: call is logged; system immediately dials the next number for the agent.
Throughput and Efficiency
- Progressive dialers maintain a 1:1 dial ratio; zero abandoned calls by definition.
- Throughput: 40-80 calls per agent per hour (higher than preview; lower than power or predictive).
- Cost per contact is moderate.
TCPA Compliance
Progressive dialers carry minimal TCPA risk because they never abandon calls. Every call that connects is immediately handled by an agent. This makes progressive dialers popular in regulated industries (healthcare, financial services).
Agent Experience
Progressive dialers provide a good balance: agents have some idle time between calls (less fatigue than power dialers) but are kept reasonably busy (more engaged than preview dialers).
Use Cases
- Compliance-sensitive industries requiring strict TCPA adherence.
- Outbound surveys and research where quality matters more than volume.
- Lead nurturing and follow-up campaigns.
AI Voice Agents
For high-volume, low-TCPA-risk outreach, AI voice agents provide superior throughput with zero abandoned calls — making progressive dialers obsolete for many use cases.
